Why use a martingale collar? What are the advantages
of a martingale collar?
In terms of training, a martingale is very much like
a flat buckle collar. It's a very gentle correction
but instead of just jerking on the side of the collar
opposite to the side the leash is hooked on. When you
tug a martingale collar the collar tightens all around-
imagine the difference between being hit in the larynx
and a shirt collar tightening around your neck. Many
people find this tightening to be gentler and also more
effective for training.
Where a martingale is at it's most useful is with dogs
that figure out they can slip a collar: Like when you
are pulling one way and they are pulling another and
the collar just pops off. The martingale makes the collar-slip
impossible. Since the martingale collar tightens ONLY
when you pull, it's comfortably loose all the time-
except when you need it to be tight.
