Training dogs to do tricks is both fun and easy for most dogs. Trick training is something both kids and adults can do and helps a dog behave better in all situations.
Most modern breeds of dogs are from working lines, and are dogs bred to "do something". When you teach your dog tricks (or obedience, or any dog sport) you are giving them purpose and confidence while helping them gain confidence.
to teach your dog to do tricks, you just need a few supplies: a leash, treats (most trainers use regular dog food kibble) a collar (not choke, flat buckle or martingale) and, if desired, a clicker.
The "Trick" to successfully teaching your dog to do tricks is instantaneous praise. If your dog sits and 15 seconds later you manage to get the treat out of your pocket and give it to him, he will have difficulty learning what action it was that prompted you to give him a treat. This is the basis of clicker training, but clickers aren't for everyone. Instead, use a unique tone of voice (a really excited, really high pitched YES will work) that you will give the moment the dog performs the trick. (Example, the moment his rear touches the floor, the moment he lifts his paw up) You'll give the verbal cue, and then ASAP give the treat. This way the verbal praise is not only praise for doing the trick right, but an indicater that a food reward is coming.
