People often ask; “what is the most obedient
breed of dog?” but the truth is that obedience
really isn't something that is bred into a breed.
Obedience is born of training, and successful
training is born of time and patience on the
part of the owner and mutual respect between
dog and owner.
Any dog will be obedient if you educate yourself
and invest 5-20 minutes everyday in training
the dog, or take him through a session or two
of formal classes. A dog has to be educated
as to what "obedient" is before he
can act that way!
As for being trainable, that's really up to
you and how you raise a pup. (If you choose
to get a puppy) "Trainability" is
largely relative. If your definition of a trainable
dog is one that lives to please you, a retriever
is probably for you, but if you have patience
and are willing to train a dog with a mind of
it's own (i.e. what many people call untrainable)
the rewards can be much greater.
Keep in mind there are people out there showing
every breed in advanced levels of obedience
and there are dogs being turned into breed rescue
because they "just don't behave"-
the difference isn't the dogs' attitudes, it's
the owners'.
