Is a Martingale or Buckle Collar right for my dog?
The type of collar depends more on conformation and
temperament than size. For example, if your dog walks
well on leash and comes when called a buckle collar
should work fine. If, however, you have a dog that frequently
tries to slip out of their collar, or a dog that would
likely run away if they did happen to get out of their
collar, then a martingale is a safer option. The size
of your dog's neck in relation to their head is a factor,
most blocky headed labs cannot slip an appropriately
fitted buckle collar even if they try, but breeds like
greyhounds and some terriers have heads smaller in diameter
than their necks- which can lead to collars slipping
off with no effort on the dog's part. The buckle-on
martingale is most useful for owners of dogs with large
heads who want to use a martingale for training purposes
(since it's difficult to size a collar so that it can
adjust large enough to slip over their head, then adjust
small enough to function correctly) or for owners who
will be frequently changing collars.
